PETER AND THE WOLF by Sergei Prokofiev; Ocala Symphony Orchestra conducted by Matthew Wardell.
Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, for narrator and orchestra, was first commissioned in 1936 by the Central Children’s Theatre. Prokofiev himself wrote the text telling the story of a young boy who manages to capture a vicious wolf. The work most noteworthy for its didactic scoring, constructed by Prokofiev to introduce children to the sounds of orchestral instruments as each character in the story is represented by a different instrument: the grandfather by a bassoon, the bird by a flute, the duck by an oboe, the cat by a clarinet, the wolf by three horns, and Peter by the strings. Peter and the Wolf has long been a classic, loved by children for its vivid storytelling, and by adults for its gentle sense of humor and good-natured tunefulness. I
DANCE ALIVE’S LADY BUG: ACTION HERO
The delightful story of a brave little lady bug who is “small in size, but big of heart” and her mighty efforts to protect her forest friends from the evil hunter and the wicked wasp and save the beautiful Love Bird. From a wonderful story to incredible dancing—you will never view dance the same way again. This is a wonderfully interactive performance with children clapping to the music, cheering Lady Bug, booing the evil hunter, and slapping hands with the dancers as they join the children in the audience. Everyone comes away feeling good and the teaching opportunities are infinite. The story deals with supporting and protecting friends; valuing what is different, valuing and protecting the animals and insects in an ecosystem; protesting and taking action against bullies and best of all, presents a strong female hero. LADY BUG: ACTION HERO delivers a wonderful message for children and a perfect first ballet to experience.
